Puy de Dôme property benefits from all the advantages its capital Clermont Ferrand brings to the party; an international airport, a university, an international school and a cosmopolitan feel - as evidenced by its annual Court Metrage international film festival. The best value Clermont Ferrand property is found in the suburbs and there is year round interest in rentals thanks to the number of major employers in town. Puy de Dôme property attracts all year round rentals due to the proximity to the Mont-Dore and Super Besse ski resorts and to spa towns like La Bourbole. The dormant volcano after which the department is named now has a restaurant at the summit!

In the north of the region, Allier property can still be snapped up at bargain prices, but for how much longer? This ‘land of 1,001 chateaux’ is a historic treasure and previously home to the Bourbon dukes. If you want to make an Allier property your home you too will be master of all you survey – and this can include the Forest of Tronçais and the Massif du Sancy! Lake Allier is a 120 hectare activities base and the volcanic Montagne Boubonnaise is popular with hikers, bikers, horse riders and skiers. Allier property is perfect for tourism-based businesses and now is a good time to invest - but you and your guests will need a car!

The jewel in the Allier crown is very definitely Vichy – renowned for its cuisine and thermal spas. Vichy has been relaunched as a European health, beauty and fitness centre and Vichy property can command high rental income during the thermal spa season from April to October. Vichy property is more expensive than elsewhere in the Auvergne and 90% is bought by the French with most Britons buying in the Ébreuil area. Vichy property is easily accessible from Clermont Ferrand airport and is within easy reach of motorways.

Cantal property shares Auvergne property prices but also the milder climates of bordering Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon. Cantal property in the lively capital, Aurillac, the medieval town of St-Flour and the market town of Mauriac is at a premium – although the latter’s black lava stone buildings are an acquired taste. Rodez airport is closer to some Cantal property than Clermont-Ferrand airport.

Haute-Loire property can be quite expensive as the department boasts some of the prettiest medieval villages in France in Arlempdes, Blesle, Lavaudieu and Pradelles. The capital Le Puy, the lively market town of Brioude, Yssingeaux with its spectacular views and Le Chaise Dieu – home to Europe’s highest abbey - offer history and culture in equal measure to their spectacular scenery. Much Haute-Loire property is closer to Lyon than to Clermont Ferrand and as such benefits from both international flights and an excellent TGV service to Lyon.
